How to Support Hormone Balance Naturally: Herbs for Cortisol, Estrogen, Progesterone, Testosterone & Liver Health

Hormone imbalance doesn’t always look like one obvious problem. Sometimes it looks like stubborn belly weight, irregular periods, painful periods, mood changes, low libido, poor sleep, feeling exhausted but wired, hot flashes, night sweats, brain fog, low energy or simply feeling like your body isn’t responding the way it used to.

And this is exactly why I don’t like looking at hormones in isolation.

Your hormones are connected to your stress response, liver, digestion, blood sugar, sleep and nutritional status. Instead of asking, “What herb balances hormones?” I prefer asking: What system needs support so the body can regulate hormones more effectively?

Here are some of the herbs, roots and adaptogens traditionally used for different pieces of the hormonal picture.

Herbs for Progesterone & Menstrual Cycle Support

Low or poorly timed progesterone can be associated with PMS, breast tenderness, spotting, irregular cycles and difficulty maintaining a healthy menstrual rhythm. Herbs don’t simply “give” your body progesterone, but certain plants have traditionally been used to support the hormonal pathways involved in a healthy cycle.

Chaste Tree Berry (Vitex) is probably one of the best known herbs for menstrual hormone support. Rather than containing progesterone, Chaste Tree Berry influences signaling between the brain and reproductive system and is commonly used for PMS and cycle irregularity.

Maca Root is a nourishing adaptogenic root traditionally used for energy, libido, reproductive wellness and hormonal resilience. It’s particularly useful when hormonal changes are happening alongside fatigue and low sexual desire.

Wild Yam contains diosgenin, a naturally occurring plant steroid compound. Your body does not convert wild yam directly into progesterone, but the herb has a long history of traditional use for menstrual discomfort and women’s reproductive wellness.

Shatavari is one of Ayurveda’s most respected herbs for female reproductive health. Traditionally considered a rejuvenating tonic, it’s used to nourish women through different hormonal stages of life.

Red Raspberry Leaf is traditionally used as a uterine and reproductive tonic. Its naturally occurring minerals and tannins make it a beautiful everyday herb for menstrual and uterine support.

Herbs for High Cortisol, Stress & Feeling “Wired but Tired”

You can eat well and exercise, but if your body constantly feels like it’s under attack from stress, your hormones can feel completely out of rhythm.

This is where adaptogens and calming herbs become important.

Ashwagandha is one of the most researched adaptogenic herbs for stress. It may help support a healthier stress response and has been studied for its effects on perceived stress and cortisol.

Rhodiola is traditionally used for mental and physical endurance, particularly when stress leaves you exhausted, unfocused and unable to keep up with everyday demands.

Holy Basil (Tulsi) is traditionally used to support resilience during emotional and physical stress while also providing antioxidant support.

Lemon Balm is one of my favourites when stress shows up as tension, restlessness, digestive upset or difficulty settling down at night.

Gynostemma is sometimes called Southern Ginseng. Traditionally used as a longevity and adaptogenic herb, it supports resilience, energy and metabolic wellness.

Schisandra is another traditional adaptogen used for stamina, stress resilience and liver support, making it especially interesting when stress and hormonal metabolism overlap.

Herbs for Estrogen & Women’s Hormonal Wellness

Estrogen isn’t the enemy. Women need estrogen. The goal is healthy production, metabolism and balance throughout the different stages of life.

Red Clover naturally contains isoflavones, plant compounds with phytoestrogenic activity. It has traditionally been used for women going through menopausal changes, including hot flashes.

Black Cohosh is one of the better-known herbs for menopausal support and is commonly used for hot flashes, night sweats and other symptoms associated with menopause.

Sage is traditionally used for excessive sweating and has become particularly popular for menopausal hot flashes and night sweats.

Dong Quai has a long history in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a women’s reproductive tonic and is traditionally used to support menstrual wellness and circulation.

Shatavari appears here again because its traditional role extends beyond the menstrual cycle into broader female reproductive and menopausal wellness.

Your Liver Has More to Do With Hormone Balance Than You May Realize

This is the part of hormonal wellness that gets overlooked.

After hormones have done their job, your body needs to metabolize and eliminate them. The liver plays a central role in hormone metabolism, while the digestive system helps move metabolites out of the body.

Supporting liver function therefore becomes part of supporting the entire hormonal picture.

Milk Thistle contains silymarin, a group of antioxidant compounds extensively studied for liver support.

Burdock Root has traditionally been used as a cleansing and liver-supportive root. It also contains inulin, a prebiotic fibre that can support beneficial gut bacteria.

Dandelion Root is one of my favourite traditional digestive and liver herbs. Its bitter compounds help support digestion and normal bile flow.

Yellow Dock has traditionally been used by herbalists for digestive, liver and bowel support, particularly when sluggish elimination is part of the bigger picture.

Artichoke Leaf supports digestion and bile production and has been researched for its effects on liver and metabolic health.

This is why someone struggling with hormonal symptoms may need more than a “hormone tea.” Sometimes supporting digestion, bowel regularity and liver function is an important part of the foundation.

Herbs for Testosterone, Libido & Men’s Hormonal Wellness

Men experience hormonal changes too. Low energy, declining sexual desire, reduced stamina and changes in body composition can all make men start paying closer attention to hormonal health.

Tongkat Ali has traditionally been used for male vitality, sexual health and stamina. Modern research has also explored its potential role in supporting testosterone in certain populations.

Nettle Root is traditionally used for male urinary and prostate health and contains plant compounds being investigated for their interactions with hormone-related pathways.

Maca Root supports libido, energy, stamina and reproductive wellness without simply acting as a testosterone replacement.

Panax Ginseng has a long history of traditional use for physical performance, energy, sexual function and resilience.

Pine Pollen naturally contains numerous plant nutrients and phytosterols and has become popular in traditional wellness communities for male vitality, although human research on testosterone effects remains limited.

Fenugreek has been studied for male sexual function, exercise performance and testosterone-related outcomes, although results vary depending on the extract and population studied.

Hormone Support Is About the Whole Body

If you’re dealing with hormonal symptoms, don’t automatically assume you need one herb aimed at one hormone.

Look at the whole picture.

Are you constantly stressed?

Are your bowels moving regularly?

How is your digestion?

Are you sleeping properly?

Are you experiencing blood sugar crashes and constant sugar cravings?

Are you approaching perimenopause or menopause?

Has your libido disappeared?

Are you supporting your liver and elimination pathways?

Those answers can tell us much more about what kind of herbal support makes sense.

At StemnRootz, we carry individual loose leaf herbs, roots and traditional herbal blends so you can build a wellness routine based on what your body actually needs rather than chasing individual symptoms.
